Boston Athenaeum
In 1807 the Boston Athenaeum was founded by the Anthology Club of Boston, and today still stands and functions as one of the oldest libraries in the country. Located at 10 1/2 Beacon Street, its current location since 1849, it's not only historical, but is one of only sixteen libraries nationwide that requires membership for entry. It was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1966. Its mission, according to the website, is "to serve its members, the broader community, and scholars throughout the world by preserving and augmenting its collections of books and art, by providing library services and cultural programs, and by preserving and enhancing the unique atmosphere of its landmark building." Its collection today contains over 600,000 volumes.

- The Anthology Club started the library with the intention of producing from it a magazine, The Monthly Anthology and Boston Review
- In the 1800s it was considered the literary and cultural center of Boston life.
- In 1827 an art gallery was added to the site.
- In 1851 it was the largest library in America.
- Today, its collection focuses on "Boston history, New England state and local history, biography, English and American literature, and the fine and decorative arts."
- The Athenaeum Ghost is Reverend Doctor Thaddeus Mason Harris (1768-1842).
- There is a Conservation Labratory that focuses on the preservation of the historic material there.
- Non-member can access the gallery on the first floor only - the rest of the building is for members!
